| Tour Highlights | Shiratani Unsuikyo is a symbolic location on Yakushima, famously visited many times by director Hayao Miyazaki, who used it as the inspiration for the forest in the film Princess Mononoke. The entire surface of the ground and the tree trunks are covered in moss, creating a profoundly mystical forest. When it rains, the moss becomes vibrant and even more fantastical, making the forest arguably more captivating than on a sunny day. Plants are diverse, featuring large trees representative of Yakushima's laurel forests, such as Distylium racemosum, Quercus acuta, and Machilus thunbergii, as well as large cedars, hemlocks, and firs characteristic of the Yakusugi forest zone. |
